Hospitality careers event hailed a big success

11 Feb 2011

The recent Glasgow Service with Style event "An Audience with the Hospitality Industry" has been hailed a huge success. This exciting and innovative event took place at Glasgow’s Mediterranean-themed Arta restaurant where more than 70 guests were given a very informative taste of the hospitality industry.

The event was supported by Skills Development Scotland and Springboard Scotland, with sponsorship from the G1 Group.  The evening was fully subscribed, with guests including careers advisors, teachers, guidance teachers, and other key influencers who give careers advice to young people and others interested in a career in our industry.

Guests enjoyed presentations from the vice-chair of GSWS, Gordon McIntyre, who is also head of hospitality at the City of Glasgow College, and Claire Cuthbertson, HR manager at Glasgow’s prestigious Grand Central Hotel.

It was also a delight to hear a number of young people who are already working in the hospitality industry describing at first hand their varied and exciting career paths.

On the night there was a wide range of exhibitor stands including cocktail making by LA Bartenders, napkin folding and wine tasting by Radisson blu, a sugar craft demonstration by the City of Glasgow College and other stands from the G1 Group, Tennent’s Training Academy, Thistle Hotel Glasgow and Springboard Scotland.

Many of the guests said after the event that they now have a much better knowledge of the breadth of career opportunities in tourism and hospitality.

Stella Callaghan, of GSWS, said: “The evening was a great success and everyone said how much they enjoyed the format.

“It was fantastic to welcome so many guests and to know that they will now have a better knowledge of our industry.

“We are always keen to encourage more young people to see tourism and hospitality as a great career choice, and we think these kind of events really help to spread the word about our vibrant industry.”
