Initiative supports female junior managers

13 Oct 2011

Can you please do a piece on the Women 1st Initiative offered by People 1st -  thanks.  See attached, and below.  The Step Up programme is the one we would promote most, but would be good to  mention briefly the mentoring opportunity too.
A new initiative is aimed at “elevating the female leaders of tomorrow within Scotland”. People 1st has secured funding to  launch a Women 1st Initiative and the tourism industry is being encouraged to put forward women for the xxx.
Recent People 1st research has highlighted that while totalling almost three  quarters of the sector’s workforce, women are still notably absent from senior  management positions. In fact, women account for only six per cent of board member positions across the sector, despite clear evidence showing the benefits this could bring.
Did you know?:
Having at least one female director on a board can cut a  company’s chances of going into receivership by about 20%.
Having two or three  female directors lowers the risk even more.
Companies with three or more women on their board generate a 73%  higher return on sales, an 83% higher return on equity and a 122% higher return  on invested capital.
•        More than half  of the respondents who took part in a recent Women 1st  online survey think that it is more difficult for women to move into senior  management roles in the sector than men.
In 2009, The Women 1st series launched outwith Scotland and offered dedicated mentoring and tailored development training programmes to 450 women. Now thanks to funding from Skills Development Scotland, People 1st can offer these programmes within Scotland for the first time.
In particular Glasgow Service with Style wants to highlight that Step Up development programmed, which leads participants through a sustainable, long-term transformation in their leadership abilities.
The course would normally cost £2,000 but it’s being offered to Scottish candidates for just £300. It comprises six one-day training sessions, including:
1. Planning and recognising your own strengths and weaknesses
2. Communication skills
3. Impact, presentation skills, dress and body language 4. Networking and network building
5. Assertiveness and confidence
6. Influencing and negotiation
This long-term, tailored programme of continuous professional development (CPD) provides the outstanding female junior managers of today with the essential skills they’ll need to become the chief executives, senior managers and board members of tomorrow
