Student lands hotel job after Buddy Day success

24 May 2011

The innovative Buddy Day project, organised by Glasgow Service with Style, has been a big success for one city business – and a new employee.
The Buddy Day initiative saw City of Glasgow College student Nicole Dolan sampling a day of work with Hilton Glasgow’s Conference and Events Sales Team.
The 20-year-old made such an impression on the team that she was offered a permanent job and is now fully employed as C&E Sales Administrator.
Glasgow Service with Style offers Buddy Day placements in partnership with Springboard and Skills Development Scotland.
Nicole, of Riddrie, is delighted by the Buddy Day outcome. She says: “I enjoyed my buddy day at the hotel because it gave me the opportunity to see the things I was learning at college being put into action.

“My day in the hotel encouraged me to apply for a position within the team when I found out there was one available and I have now secured a full-time position.”

Yvonne Love, human resources director at Hilton Glasgow, believes that the  Buddy Day is an excellent opportunity students, education providers, careers advisors and industry personnel to spend a time experiencing a typical working day.

Yvonne adds: “We had ‘buddies’ in several different departments, including housekeeping, reception, leisure club and also events, where Nicole was placed.

“Overall we were delighted with the enthusiasm, commitment and interest of the buddies who attended. They were all keen to learn and soaked up as much of the experience as they could.

‘When a position became available within the events team, it was wonderful that Nicole was able to draw upon her experience of the Buddy Day and  apply for the position.
“I have no doubt that her time spent in the department gave her that extra bit of confidence to succeed.

“I would genuinely encourage all hotels and service industry employers to consider participating in future Buddy Days. We certainly will be.”
There will be another GSWS Buddy Day in the autumn, so keep an eye on our events page for further details.
